C5 Microstructure evolution in single crystal superalloys simulated by the phase-field method
The most relevant casting defects in directionally solidified turbine blades are freckles and pores. Project C5 aims at modelling the formation of these defects. The reliable simulation of the solidification of multicomponent alloys must consider crystal anisotropy, alloy thermodynamics, multicomponent diffusion and convection in the melt. Relevant physical processes occur on length scales which span 8 orders of magnitude. The evolution of microstructure during solidification, heat treatment (including HIP) and creep represents the research framework of project C5.
