B7 Crystal defects and complex solid solutions

Project B7 of SFB/TR 103 has two main objectives. First, it investigates the formation of defects during solidification and heat treatments of single crystal superalloys. Second, it explores thermodynamic equilibria and atomic mobilities in complex solid solutions with compositions derived from those of the γ channels in superalloys. In the experimental solidification program, the effects of key parameters on the formation of dislocations and low angle grain boundaries are investigated. The ingot metallurgy infrastructure of the project will also be used to prepare complex solid solutions as ingots and sputter targets for project B5. Model alloys with up to six elements, will be used to study the effects of chemical complexity on phase stabilities and atomic mobilities.
